Fletcher Shears continues his prolific stream of music releases under his side project Puzzle with "Sigh", a new single from his upcoming EP Tighten the Reins. The twenty-something year old from Orange, California, has put out about twenty-something albums on his Bandcamp since 2012, and lucky for us, he's showing no signs of slowing down.
"Sigh" seems to be an unabashed breakup song, despite Shears' capacity to present meaning in a more covert and twisted manner (as he also likes to do in The Garden with his brother Wyatt Shears). He has always opted for a refreshing mix of sincerity, playful use of abstract metaphor, and satire, keeping us on our toes for what to expect and keeping himself perpetually captivating.
On its introduction, we're led to believe this track might just be a straightforward ballad, considering the particularly winsome and heart wrenching quality of the sounds he's chosen and the exquisitely weary bass line that accompanies them. Then in signature Puzzle style, the chorus swiftly flips that notion upside down, shifting the plane into more high octane territory. Mirroring the cycles we all go through during a tough separation, this song takes us through the tired and reflective moments as well as those of desperation and half-lost hope for the return of whoever or whatever is causing this pain with their absence.
