DIGITAL ft. Drop the Lime, Canblaster, Zeds Dead at the Phoenix Toronto

Back from another weekend crammed with hotshot DJ sets under the dewy heat of sunny Toronto Ontario. DIGITAL at the Phoenix was the place to be Saturday night so where were you? Please don't say Above and Beyond.

This lineup had every type of party goer by the balls from dubstep pillheads to swagged out four on the flour connaisseurs. And the opening sets by NYC's Drop the Lime and Paris's Canblaster did more than just please a crowd fleshing for wobbly bass.

When I read the bill right off the bat I knew I was going just to see this Club Cheval prodigy. Canblaster played a hyperactive opening set hopping from genre to genre with clashes of 90s hip hop and his own schizophrenic house stylings. Throwing in Craig Mack from 95 had me hyped, and with a tracklist that made even some of the biggest music nerds seem like a bunch of big room guidos Canblaster set the bar on what was expected that night.

It became clear who the true headliner was when Drop the Lime stepped on stage. This guy is the rebirth of the classic rockstar, there's no hiding it. He hits the mic in style, and his strung out antics can make a book club go wild.

Convulsing from his own vox fed through a chromed 50s vintage, Drop the Lime encases Cash, Perkins, and Presley. And he surrenders to the legends by playing throwbacks of classy swing hits while resurrecting a unique feeling that's stuck in it's own time.

Of course the year is 2011, and with that comes the smooth house hits and hard electro bangers. Julio Bashmore's Battle for Middle You comes to mind and the Crookers fronted mega collab Bust 'Em Up by Dr. Gonzo.

As the set came to a close, Luca decided to slip in his latest unreleased original. If I didn't clock in those last few beers I probably would have remembered the name, but keep your ears up for a jam on old daddy's Gretsch during the buildup and breakdown.

I'll throw in some Drop the Lime remixes for you to jive to up above, and be sure to catch him when he rolls into your town. Luca is an animal of his own, and he unleashes the beast with nothing but two decks and a microphone.
