Taylor McFerrin reveals debut LP 'Early Riser,' shares "The Antidote"

The debut album by Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist Taylor McFerrin, Early Riser, will be released by Brainfeeder on June 3rd.  With this announcement comes the album’s lead single, the immaculate, complex “The Antidote” featuring Australian vocalist Nai Palm of neo-soul group Hiatus Kaiyote.  The track reminds one of Bonobo at his best, with Nai Palm’s lightweight vocals confidently rising above the fast, choppy sea of instruments.  McFerrin handles almost all the instrumentation himself on the album, but this is the kind of music that begs to be played with a whole band in a live scenario.  He does share the workload a little, enlisting label affiliates Thundercat and RYAT as well as McFerrin’s father, Bobby McFerrin, who ironically didn’t need a single instrument when recording his smash hit “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.”  We haven’t heard much from Taylor McFerrin in the past, his main prior release was a brief three-track offering from 2011, also on Brainfeeder.  Since then he’s clearly been honing his craft into what is sure to be an incredible debut album. I received my degree in English from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, and Virginia is still home. Apart from my yearly pilgrimage to Moogfest and occasional shows in DC, Detroit, and New York, I like to stick to the fringes, with an eye always open toward music that is forward-thinking and unique, whatever the genre.
