The pioneer of Powwow Step and founding member of JUNO-winning group A Tribe Called Red, Shub concludes his expansive project with Heritage (Part Two), a collaborative production that celebrates unity across cultures and generations. A powerful encapsulation of Shub's ambitious, two-part autobiography diving into his origins where Indigenous music is headed, the enriching project is a varied explosion of sounds and styles.
Where Part One laid the foundation with its hard-hitting yet celebratory rhythms built on hip-hop, '90s IDM, dub-infused trip-hop and drill bass, Part Two taps into Shub's full potential with its blend of electronic, hip-hop, and the powwow energy. With a list of featuring artists including DJ Paul, Natasha Fisher, Aysanabee, Drezus, Sebastian Gaskin, and more, bringing the project to life with authencity and creative freedom, each track on the album leaves a lasting piece of culture across every note.
From the groovy, fuzzed out stylings of anthemic offering "Bloodline," and the echoing, layered textures of "Origin," to the message of solidarity at the centre of focus track "Rise," anchored by Aysanabee's soaring vocals and a deeply personal verse from Drezus on mental health, the collection is grounded in a sense of belonging as it takes what belongs to history and makes it our own. "Rise" is elevated by accompanying visuals, filmed in Toronto's St. Stephen-in-the-Fields church, paying ode to the enduring resilience of Indigenous communities.
Speaking of the project, Shub says, "Heritage is about bridging generations. It's about taking what our ancestors passed down and making sure it continues to evolve. Our culture isn't stuck in the past — it's alive, it's powerful, and it belongs on the biggest stages in the world." Hearing these artists step onto these tracks and take them somewhere I never could have on my own… that was the most rewarding part of making this record. It's about cultures coming together through my music. If you can forget about everything else for a moment, take it in, and just feel free — that's the real beauty."
Having made his name as part of the JUNO-winning Indigenous electronic group A Tribe Called Red, Shub has consistently built a reputation for anthemic electronic soundscapes underpinned by the influences of his culture as he continues to shape himself as an ambassador for Indigenous music on a national stage.
