I've had the pleasure of being in contact with many established, as well as up-and-coming mashup artists, with my time coordinating Mashup Monday. However today we deviate from the norm to premiere native New Jerseyan, DJ Ego's self-titled Ego EP. Relying on a plethora of samples ranging from Big Sean, Fedde Le Grand, Smash Mouth, Dada Life, and more this 6-track EP brings absolute raw power to your ears.
Technically speaking, the tracks are on point with their sound, and the samples seem to complement each other quite nicely. I would've liked to have seen more obscure samples being used than your typical Skrillex "Summit" or Flux Pavilion "Bass Cannon", but DJ Ego expertly uses their energy to amplify any potential dance environment. Yet, hearing Smash Mouth's "All Star" on top of Skrillex gave me a little bit of nostalgia. I've highlighted "A$$ Clap" (for the addictive nature of Big Sean's "Ass" combined with Yellow Claw & Cesqeaux's "Make It Clap") and "Original Buns" because you can never go wrong with Major Lazer. The progression that DJ Ego has shown in his mashups leads me to expect even bigger things out of him for 2013.
