Connecticut-based singer-songwriter and founder of Highest Frequency Records Erik Rabasca taps into hard-fought wisdom and quiet optimism on latest album New Scrolls, an intentional collection of songs rooted in a blend of country folk & swing. Built on earthy soundscapes and intimate storytelling, the project encapsulates life with weariness and fortitude in equal parts.
Weaving the experiences and emotions of life with an observational touch, the album is laden with energy, vibration, information, and healing within its introspective yet gritty sonic world. The textured album is meditative and curious as it unfurls the intricacies of humanity with a melodic flourish.
The depth of the project is perfectly captured by lead track "Wise Up," which reflects on being more self-aware in today's world. Led by intricate guitar instrumentation, poetic lyrics and flowing delivery, the country-tinged track is feel-good with a tender lilt even as it dives into the challenges of life.
Other tracks like “Foolin’ Yourself” which captures humanity without getting caught up in the distorted illusion of expectations, “First Time Before” which recognises fleeting desires and “Love Resounds” exploring the trust and joy of a long relationship, all reflect life lived with joy, sadness and everything in between. Layering everyday observations with poignant moments of spirituality, each track on the album evokes curiosity, catharsis and comfort.
Speaking of the project, Rabasca says, "You have to live your life. Challenges will come at you from all angles. Just when you think you’re in the clear and can just live a little, life will knock the shit out of you again. There’s disappointments, brutality, sadness, lessons, growth, love and joy. We’re here to experience it all. And hopefully these New Scrolls will hit you at the right moment for you."
With the album marking Rabasca's step into the acoustic spotlight with its stripped-back, warming musicality, a sense of ease and joy makes it way into his performances.
