Meet New England–native singer-songwriter Kalen, who began writing songs on the piano at age 11 and grew up listening to her Woodstock-going mother's vinyl collection. Since then, her love of storytelling has evolved into a deep commitment to live performance and connecting with audiences through her sets.
Her 12-track LP, Velvet Night, released via Hi 4 Head Records, was just released, and on first listen, her voice carries a potent folk-pop quality reminiscent of 90s artists like Jewel, particularly on “You Were Meant for Me.” Like Jewel, Kalen’s vocals are steeped in emotion and longing, with each note landing with intimacy and weight.
On her seventh track, “Black Ice,” Kalen strips everything back into a piano ballad that cuts through any noise. It opens with the line: “Sucked into the void again, don’t scream, my friend, steady.”
Lyrically, the track is intentionally open-ended, offering a sense of comfort that meets the listener wherever they are in their uncertainty. It reads as both a grounding presence and a quiet warning, gently pushing the listener to confront hardships they may not immediately recognize.
The result is intimate, gentle, and quietly powerful. Kalen’s vocals remain front and center, carrying a strong sense of vulnerability and emotional depth, with each phrase lingering long after it lands.
For fans of raw vocals and an emphasis on artistry over perfection, this track may well lead you to explore the rest of the album.
Kalen kicks off her upcoming tour with co-conspirator Jacque Ryal; see upcoming shows here.
The tour will feature a mix of songs from the album alongside stripped-down versions from her cinematic darkwave trip-noir project Death By Piano, which she fronts.
