French cosmic pop-rock duo Billet Doux have released their new single, “Maybe Tokyo.”
Named for the 17th-century French expression "billet doux," meaning "secret love letter," the duo released their earworm of a track hoping to catch the interest of fans of Ellie Goulding or Halsey, with whom they share sonic similarities: sugary vocals, electro-pop beats, and straightforward melodies.
However, the sweet tone masks a darker story within the lyrics, as the track follows the journey of a woman trapped in a remote American town who suddenly realises she has to leave everything behind, wondering “to break the spell/and who knows/where I’ll go/maybe Tokyo.”
“Maybe Tokyo” is a very effective dream-pop track that will definitely be stuck on a loop for anyone who gives it a listen.
