Brooklyn-based English songwriter Fenne Lily has returned with her new single, “Uh Huh.”
Released to coincide with the announcement that new next album, Win Win, will be released later this year on October 23 via Nettwerk, “Uh Huh” is a warm track about moving through heartbreak and making it out of the grieving period that comes with it.
Written during a time when Fenne Lily was busy moving to New York from England, “Uh Huh” (and the rest of the album) found Fenne Lily writing endlessly about a crisis of confidence after finding herself overwhelmed by such a large city, while also dealing with a crushing and unexpected break-up.
Despite its warmth, “Uh Huh” feels palpably lonely, the mood helped along by the raw emotion in Fenne Lily’s voice and the way her voice gently trembles as she sings. The lyrics are centred around the basic idea of Fenne Lily and a loved one having a conversation about why their relationship ended, moving between first and third person as she sings “does it hurt to think about it?/’Cause it hurt to think about it/uh huh/find someone you love/and let it kill you/do you still wanna do this?/uh huh”. It’s frank and honest and a little bit devastating the way the lyrics don’t flinch.
“It [the track] follows the end of one love and the start of another, when you meet someone new but the residual pain from the time before is holding you back,” says Fenne Lily. “Every break-up has felt like it’ll hurt forever but it’s always let me to something different, often better; never nothing.”
