UNTER STRØM’s “Orynth” emerges with cinematic intensity

UNTER STRØM’s new single “Orynth signals the arrival of a carefully honed creative partnership operating at full intensity. Formed by Alex Gonzales (Matte Blvck) and John Kunkel (The New Division, John Grand), the Los Angeles and San Diego duo brings together years of experience across darker electronic and alternative spaces, channeling that history into something that is both immediate and forward-thinking. Released via renegade record label Breathing Records, “Orynth” sets the tone with a sound that is as cinematic as it is club-driven, balancing brooding industrial textures with melodic sophistication.

From its opening moments, “Orynth” establishes a sense of atmosphere that feels expansive and immersive. The track unfolds with a deliberate tension, built on driving percussion, hypnotic synth patterns, and layered sound design that gradually intensifies before giving way to euphoric release. It’s a track that thrives in contrast, dark yet emotive, mechanical yet fluid, capturing that elusive intersection between underground techno grit and widescreen melodic storytelling.

What makes “Orynth” particularly compelling is the chemistry behind its creation. As Kunkel recalls, “Orynth was either the third or fourth track we made, and by that point we were still in the early stages of discovering our sound. Alex sent me an early demo… and my jaw dropped. I’d never heard anything like it and knew we had something truly special on our hands.” That sense of discovery is embedded in the track itself, giving it an energy that feels unforced yet deeply intentional.

For Gonzales, the process represented a creative turning point. “Coming into this project with John, I was stepping into unfamiliar territory… ‘Orynth’ was a real moment of growth for me. I stopped overthinking and just created something that felt true to my identity.” That authenticity translates clearly in the music as it is carving out its own sonic identity. Gonzales’ initial vision, combined with Kunkel’s rapid and intuitive expansion, “he turned it around the same day, elevating it in a way that felt completely aligned”, speaks to the trust and shared instinct that define UNTER STRØM.

Technically, the production is just as impressive as the concept. Time-stretched atmospheres and intricate melodic layers give the track depth, while its rhythmic backbone keeps it grounded in the physicality of the dance floor. The final mix by Aaron Short (Madison Beer, The Naked and Famous, So Below) adds a polished, expansive finish that enhances the track’s scale without diluting its raw edge.

Ultimately, “Orynth” captures a moment of intense creative momentum while laying the foundation for what UNTER STRØM could become: a project rooted in collaboration, evolution, and a willingness to push beyond the familiar boundaries of techno and melodic electronic music. If this debut is any indication, UNTER STRØM isn’t just exploring new territory, they’re actively shaping it.
