Finnish artist Ahva is known for experimenting with indie pop and early-2000s influences to create something that emits a slightly off-kilter charm with unpredictability. There’s a playful instinct behind it, but also a sense that he’s not afraid to let things feel a bit strange. That balance is evident in his new single “Trapped in Freedom,” a track that captures a very specific kind of emotional limbo.
Written during lockdown in Helsinki, the song reflects that odd period where time felt stretched and repetitive, even when life was technically standing still. With young children at home and routine slipping away, Ahva found himself caught between freedom and restriction, a feeling he sums up by sharing, “You’re technically free, but in practice, you’re very much trapped.” That contradiction drives the track forward, built on a restless energy that began at the piano and expanded into something more layered and urgent. It feels controlled but slightly chaotic, mirroring the ebb and flow of the experience itself.
“Trapped in Freedom” also sets the tone for Ahva’s upcoming album Clean Your Soul, which digs further into the tension between control and release, both creatively and personally. It sets up a project that leans into that conflicted energy of wanting to move forward but not fully getting there.
