Singer-songwriter Mira Lazuli has released her latest single, “Good News”.
An intimate folk-noir track featuring banko, double bass, and accordion alongside Mira Lazuli’s haunting vocals, “Good News” is all about the emotional turbulence of fleeting romance and deciding to carry on afterwards despite its difficulty.
The driving rhythm of “Good News” gives it a hopeful tone, mimicking a sense of physically just continuing on as part of a journey. The song is brisk and doesn’t hang around, despite its five-and-a-half-minute run time – this might have been a turbulent time for Mira Lazuli, but she’s not going to give it more time than it strictly needs.
Despite its driving pace, the buoyancy of the track gives it an unsettling edge, creating a sense of uncertainty that complements the odd harmonies the vocals produce. The song’s backstory – a sweet romance that became a difficult long-distance relationship – is captured well by this, and ends up more emotive thanks to it.
Speaking about the song, Mira Lazuli said: “Do you know what it’s like to share your location with a lover in a long-distance situationship? This song came out of that feeling. Trying to make sense of distance, silence, and the stories we tell ourselves when we’re waiting for someone to reach out.”
“Good News” is poetic and captures a very specific modern feeling in the trappings of old-world storytelling and themes.
