Prolific Detroit beatmaker Apollo Brown and Fresno Rap veteran Planet Asia are currently working on their collaborative project Sardines but in the interim, they share their new single “Wide Awake”. The track sets the tone perfectly with its throwback TV theme aesthetics made up of solemn nostalgia-inducing flutes, brass stabs and punchy drums. Planet Asia once again shows how sharp his pen game is as he delivers a smooth and engaging performance that he is known for. From the pop references, Patois inflection, social commentary and a whole lot of bravado to match. Not one line is wasted as you can hear every word permeating through the speakers with so much authority as he spits "My clientele is wide awake, gimme half a year and I might just buy the place/cross the line of no return and you can die today/infamous like the Scarface picture with a pile of Yay".
“Wide Awake” is the second single from the duo’s upcoming album Sardines which is due out September 8th. The project is the follow-up to the duo’s beloved 2017 collaborative album Anchovies. Apollo and Planet Asia improve upon the minimalist, grimy Hip-Hop theme from the first collab with pristine execution.
