New-Jersey band Modern Chemistry members Brendan Hourican and Joe Zorzi have spent the year foraying into different sonic paths with solo projects. Now they come together on split singles “just a little off!” and “Animal,” in a uniquely creative effort to go solo together.
Released under their respective monikers Zorzi as thepaintingcompany and Hourican as Brendan the Navigator the tracks come to life as unapologetic lyrical pursuits merge with expansive aural explorations. Brendan’s “Animal,” with textured melodies of guitars and alt-rock synths soar to anthemic peaks as airy, soulful vocals delve into a raw message of “feeling embarrassed about how much I want someone, and lacking the courage to do anything about it.”
Meanwhile, “just a little off!” makes for a buoyant pop production rooted in 80s-inspired ethereal guitars and an emotive message on how easy it can be to get stuck in your own head.
With two distinct soundscapes that make for a diverse sonic experience but a cohesive artistry founded upon on powerful yet vulnerable reflections, the musical pair’s union is one that continues to promise some flavourful slices of genre-bending music for years to come.
