LA (Hermosa Beach)-based, Boston MA raised rapper and producer Skipp Whitman is an alternative indie hip-hop artist who traverses the indie and underground space with his brand of off-kilter rap music. His latest release "On Weed" is a trippy and somewhat reflective track that dwells on paranoia and being under the influence of the herb. The Spittzwell-produced track is made up of soft Xylophones riffs with warm basslines and a smooth drum groove that matches his laidback sincere-driven flow. Skipp gets honest with himself as he details the swirling emotions and anxiety that come with him smoking with lines like "Before I am on stage, I am nauseous/compare my voice again to someone/smoking marijuana make me paranoid?". He is also joined by fellow rapper HMZA who questions several decisions he has made and the road he is on as a human. Far from being rueful, the track is more of self-observation and leaves an open-ended discussion for listeners to tap into.
The visual concept for the track is brilliant and the use of trippy and zany effects helps heighten the paranoid theme but the playful element is still pronounced.
