Comforts bring britpop on "The City"

Brighton-based four-piece Comforts has made an impressive return with their vibrant and woozy new single, "The City." Produced and mixed by Alexander Gordon, who has previously worked with the likes of Sundara Karma, The Cure and Rag’n’Bone Man, the track is the perfect showcase for the band's unassuming yet warmhearted indie-rock exploits.

At its onset, 'The City' submerges the audience in a surreal sonic landscape, featuring frontman Sam's coy yet delicate vocal line juxtaposed against a backdrop of modulated and reverb-drenched guitar riffs. The track progressively gains momentum, embarking the listener on a voyage through the nuances of lost and rediscovered love, underscored by a 60s-style drumbeat, runaway bassline, rhythmic crooning, and strummed acoustics.

Sam elucidates that the song reflects the experience of falling for someone in an unfamiliar city, where everything feels different, and establishing a connection between those contrasting elements and the emotions that arise. It is an ode to all the individuals that the band has had the pleasure of meeting thus far.

Drawing inspiration from 90s Brit-Pop and early 00s indie, Comforts has captured a comforting sense of familiarity, while simultaneously preserving a novel and electrifying edge.

With their new EP set for release later this year, Comforts is sure to make a name for themselves as an exciting live act to watch, having already been tipped into This Feeling's nationally acclaimed ‘Big in 2023’ campaign. If "The City: is anything to go by, Comforts' future is looking very bright indeed.
