Texas rapper BigXThaPlug delivers a grimy trap sound on newest album, Amar. Named after the rapper’s son, the project showcases his drive and motivation. Packed with upbeat tempos and booming bass, production is polished and blends seamlessly into BigX’s Southern drawl. His verses demand attention and forcefully expose his diary of thoughts.
The project opens with the rhythmic melody of ”Switched Up.” The rapper hops on the beat with a boisterous “Ayy” before delivering a rapid fire verse. The beat picks up gradually before transitioning into the next track, “Rush Hour.” He weaves fast-paced bars through the mellow hip-hop beat barely stopping for a breath.
“Primetime” is a standout single on the project. A sultry saxophone plays a melody as the beat drops. BigX’s deep voice comes through the harmony. He raps the chorus, “Primetime X, who the f*** would’ve thought I was next, bought all of these diamonds just so I can flex, when I open my mouth bet her p**** get wet.” His raw and raunchy verses over the sensuous jazz inspired trap beat is executed perfectly.
“Texas” is another production masterpiece. The beat incorporates a western guitar and banjo riff with bass and synths. The rapper pays homage to his home state’s country roots while adding a trap infusion that is palpable and engaging. He exclaims, “Used to think Pimp C was a god before he went to Heaven, I knew what pushin' P was before Gunna even said it.” He nods to several more artists throughout the lyrics before referring back to the state’s famous catchphrase, “Don’t mess with Texas.”
The project takes a slightly more romantic turn with “Bad Bitches” featuring Ro$ama. The track has a playful R&B beat. BigX maintains his stamina and consistency, spitting one sticky bar after another. “Bacc to tha Basics” and “Safehouse” blend into each other sharing similar tempos. The rapper’s powerful charge is still at the forefront but becomes slightly repetitive. He continues to be concise with each verse adapting to a slower rhythm or bringing big energy to a faster melody.
For the second to last track, he taps fellow Texas rappers, Erica Banks and Tay Money on “Thick.” He lends himself to the catchy hook and kicks off the song, but steps back to allow the two females to dominate the trap beat. The final song off the project, “Dream” takes a more introspective approach as BigX describes the motivation behind his grind. The accompanying music video follows him on a luxurious trip to New York City.
BigXThaPlug is making a name for himself as a talented storyteller and fierce rapper. Amar proves he can deliver a full length project packed with cohesive beats and steady lyrical stamina. He is a hearty chicken soup for the trap lover’s soul.
