Drawn from a place of pain, the heartfelt number comes to life as a deeply personal exploration of her own experience with abuse while making many others feel seen in their experiences as well.
Led by her soothing vocal lines and a soft, minimal instrumentation, the gentle number captures every moment of pain brought on by abuse as it meditates on the complex idea that if an abuser had gotten help, they may have not led their victims down a painful path to find help and safety of their own.
Channeling vulnerability and transforming it into empowerment and healing, “One Less Broken Heart,” is not only a touching account of Sagal’s pain but a brave attempt to break down misconceptions surrounding abuse, with the accompanying music video offering a raw glimpse of the loneliness and complexity of emotions brought on by abuse.
Speaking of the music video, she said, "We didn't want to show the abuse in action, but instead to show what it's like on the other side of a relationship like this, what it's like to grieve someone who hurt you, and what it's like to show up to therapy twice a week. We decided to use memories from the past as well as moments from the present to show how different it is once that person has left your life, yet how similar the feeling can be even when you’re together. Both situations can be very painful and lonely. "
With a fearless yet delicate artistry build upon an ability to connect with people while working through challenges of her own, Sagal who has spent a decade slowly and steadily honing her skills is an act worth keeping on your radar.
