JXXIII (J23) pronounced Jay twenty-three is a rapper/ songwriter born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia in the early 90's by Nigerian immigrants. She started out by crafting poetry in her teenage years and proceeded to drop a trilogy of mixtapes in her college years. After graduating from uni, she founded her own record label CAQ Records (CrownAllQueens.com) and hasn't looked back since.
Her newest release titled "In Mind" is an interesting mix of hip-hop with 90s soul elements. Bolstered by punchy drum breaks, warm textures and a rich guitar riff, JXXIII leads the charge with her smooth laidback flow and lyrics that dwell on taking chances and being open-minded when it comes to love. I dig how she doesn't attempt to go over heads with complex rhymes and sticks to someone listeners can easily follow from start to finish. She is also joined by vocalist S777 who cements the record with a sultry chorus.
