If you find yourself searching for fresh, up-and-coming artists in the realm of soul and R&B, look no further than Ella Knight. Having been included in the fifth year cohort at Future Bubblers, the development program and offshoot of Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings label, the U.K. vocalist appears ready to take off. With the recent release of her latest single “All Around,” Knight is back with an exclusive live session of the track for EARMILK, which was filmed at the legendary Brownswood Basement studio.
In a setting that has helped launch the careers of artists like Sampa The Great, Greentea Peng, and Black Pumas, Ella Knight seems right at home with her three-piece band as they deliver a commanding performance of “All Around.” Her delicate and emotive vocals glide through the song as the band provides lush instrumental support. The group shows off their skills particularly in the playful, scat-singing breakdown that occupies the latter part of the arrangement. Their command of jazz vocabulary is tastefully integrated into the song’s accessible groove, which is a surprisingly difficult task. Knight’s warm vocal style and vibrant interplay with her band make the session memorable and show that she has the talent to continue her rise in the music world.
