donSmith comes through with visuals for his latest song "Group Chat" following the release of his new LP Don't Ask Me Where I'm From. The somber and somewhat chilling track sees the rapper declaring war on gentrification and the effects it has on both black and brown communities. The Harlem emcee is as unapologetic as ever and stays candid with lyrics like "Soldier before Cobra, I never sold front row tickets to my own culture/Ain't making bread off soda no money on pop, I put the guap in the culture." Let's give credit to the production here done by Zoomo who crafts two different cinematic beats for the verses.
The accompanying music video directed by Miguel Ortiz makes use of several motifs and set pieces that allude to the theme of the song. Far from just being a collage of performance shots, there are moments where donSmith is flanked by two ladies seemingly appropriating the vintage NY snapbacks while he tries to figure out what is going on. The video ends on a cinematic note as the instrumental switches with the structural changes depicted in the shots. It's quite an engaging display of art and social commentary, especially the roll credits scene.
