Indie trio Brainstory started out as any other small-town band: a group of friends living in a dead town, with nothing to do, and all the time in the world to do it. After finally making their way from Rialto to L.A, the trio felt liberated. Not only with the abundance of opportunities, but with the freedom to finally explore genres such as jazz, psych rock, and whatever else came to mind in a way that just wasn't possible before. The same freedom that led them to record their forthcoming debut LP Buck, with a sneak peak of what's to come charmingly put in their newest video for the single "Dead End".
"'Dead End' is a psychotic downward spiral of a man down on his luck. Just…. wait for it,” lead vocalist Kevin Martin explains. Which perhaps explains the surprise ending of finding out the video's protagonist had two tied-up men stuffed into his trunk the whole time. Then again, perhaps it doesn't. But that is the brilliance of Brainstory. They're laidback and free, choosing to create music as a state of mind rather than as a conforming formula of drops and climaxes. "Dead End" is fluid, taking cues from classic soul melodies and easygoing rock to create a sound that is both timeless and contemporary. Martin's effortless vocal delivery lulls you into a Californian state where the sun never ceases to shine, and time moves at its own pace, ignorant to the overzealous needs of those around it.
Brainstory's debut album is scheduled to drop on November 15 via Big Crown Records, with select tour dates available for purchase here.
