French bass house producer Dustycloud is one of those who have such unique signature sounds, anyone can recognize his work within ten seconds. With past support from the likes of OWSLA, CONFESSION and Deadbeats, he has been steadily building an impressive and stacked resume. His latest offering, Skyfall EP, is a welcome addition to it that will further bolster his status as one of the most exciting prospects in the scene.
The first single, "Find A New Direction," is brimming with retro vibes. Building from soulful vocals and jazzy melodies, it switches into glitchy basslines and palpable percussions in the drops, with the ability to inject life into any dancefloors. "Passion" and "Mighty" are both more similar to his previous outputs. With much darker and more ominous sound, these two songs feature gritty bass synths, intelligent percussive elements and witty use of vocal samples.
"Mighty," in comparison, is more about the full-throttle industrial grit. Both tracks display Dustycloud's mature sound design sensibility. "As time goes on I continue to find myself experimenting with new things, pushing my vision of what house music can be," Dusty shares with EARMILK. "With three really different tracks, the Skyfall EP is a culmination of my journey as an artist up to now." Once feeling lost and frustrated about making music, he came across an audio sample that said, "just be yourself." It gave him the inspiration he needed at the perfect timing. That was when and where Dustycloud was born, with a mission to spread the positive message – "don’t be scared of doing what you love, don’t be scared of not fitting in little boxes society tries to put you in, don’t be scared of being different. Just be yourself."
