The legendary hip-hop duo Gang Starr return after a 16-year long unofficial break with the single "Family and Loyalty". The single comes right after a phone recording by Nas was posted by DJ Premier late last week on Instagram. The message was a revisit of the classic "Aiight chill…" skit off Gang Starr's 1994 album Hard To Earn which had Nas, Masta Ace and other emcees leaving voice messages for the duo.
"Family and Loyalty" is standard Gang Starr to the fullest as Preem chops up a solid beat that knocks and also gives you that good old nostalgic hip-hop feeling like we are all back in 1997. The late guru's vocals sound as pristine as ever and doesn't miss a beat with his monotone flow which he mastered throughout his illustrious career. Lastly, the decision to include J. Cole may throw ardent fans off but the Dreamville head honcho held it down and comes through with a solid verse which may turn out to be his last feature (until further notice).
“Family and Loyalty” is a welcoming gift from Gang Starr & J. Cole to fans and the culture that raised them. Get the song on all DSPs here.
