"Broken Toys" is the newest retro-tinged summer banger from UK music collective The Tribe Of Good. The collective includes a wide array of musicians from producers — Hal Ritson, Rich 'Fiasco' Adlam, Thomas Gandey (Cagedbaby), Basement Jaxx singer Vula Malinga, Jamiroquai guitarist Rob Harris, and Ritson’s long-time drummer Alex Reeves. On "Broken Toys", the lead vocals can be attributed to London based singer Eshan Gopal whose vocals are uncannily reminiscent of a young Motown performer. It sounds good on paper but it's even better when you hear Gopal as he delivers a beautiful performance over the rich Motown inspired production.
"Broken Toys" is a glaring homage to the early Jacksons records and truly captures their youthful exuberance and soulful aura to the tee. The coming of age song dwells on Gopal's blossoming love for a girl and his personal growth away from the things he did as a kid. Think Jackson 5's "Big Boy" mixed with the energy of "ABC". For a second you may think it's a remix of an unreleased Jackson 5 song but believe you me when I say it's far from it.
"Broken Toys" is taken from The Tribe Of Good's debut LP released via Ultra Records. The collective add that the project was crafted during the initial stages of the Trump presidency, with Brexit and the #MeToo movement later sliding into view. The group’s ethos is one of unabashed positivity and brawny resistance – “feeding the light into society through music”, offers Ritson.
