Sometimes we need a bit of darkness to give us perspective in our lives. With the rise of artists like Grimes and Billie Eilish there is obviously an ominous side of pop music begging to be explored. Cue goth pop project So Below, the brainchild of New Zealand-based songwriter Madeline North. Since 2015, So Below has been unearthing the dark and shadowy side of synth-pop and on new single "Bone," she delivers a mix of cutting melodies and melodramatic themes.
"Bone" proves that female-fronted pop artists have the ability to get aggressive without losing their melodic intuition. Forebearers of the pop underworld like Nine Inch Nails and HEALTH would be proud. With a burning build that sizzles to a noisy climax, North artfully strings together a mix of tension and gratification on this track. The pleasure is felt through the pain. It's like stepping into a pitch black room and suddenly realizing this is exactly where you want to be.
Recreating that feeling again
forever harder at getting you in
take a hit if you miss the mark
always loving that step in the dark
"Bone" explores a suffering relationship told through self-reflection and it's unafraid to tackle the grittiness of anguish. North certainly has a vibe and this is just the first taste from her upcoming full-length record due out later this year.
