The R&B world should take notice of a Belgian up-and-comer who goes by the name WAYI. The 25-year-old singer-songwriter only has a few tracks to her name so far, but she has a debut EP on the way, which she recently teased with a single entitled “Insecure.” The velvety track delves into themes of troubled relationships and jealousy, which is only one of the aspects of the forthcoming EP called Love in Progress. The upcoming project is intended to deal with the myriad facets of love and their implications in our daily lives. WAYI wrote all the music on the five-song EP that is set for release on March 27 and James Lowland covered all the production work.
“Insecure” is a slow-churning track with tasteful harmonies and some heartfelt vocals from WAYI. The throbbing bass lines stand out in particular, giving the verses and the bridge some edge amid the otherwise suave production. In the song’s hook, WAYI outlines the crux of the lyrical material about a lover who couldn’t stay faithful. She writes, “Why would you make me so insecure / you’re sayin’ you love me but yet you actually don’t / ‘cause it’s not me you’re chasin’ / I am the one who’s cravin’ / why would you make me so insecure?” The theme of “Insecure” is nothing new, especially in the world of R&B, but WAYI makes it her own with her unique vocal delivery and Lowland’s effective production. It will be interesting to see what else the team has in store when the EP drops next month.
