Discover the meaning of funeral pop with MXMS' "Paris"

Funeral pop. That’s a new one. In the music business, creative descriptors are of utmost importance. Every band, group, and artist has certain qualities that make them different. So the word choice used to describe said artist carries a lot of weight. The right adjective helps frame a sound in the listener’s mind. The wrong choice will cause a potential listener to lose interest and move on completely. So it’s always a fun surprise to come across a newly defined genre or subgenre. You know, like funeral pop.

LA/NY duo MXMS describe their music on SoundCloud as funeral pop. And if they are the creators and leading artists of this small subgenre, funeral pop is worth your time and attention.

At first glance, funeral pop might seem like another name to describe emo music. But “Paris,” and MXMS for that matter, isn’t as one dimensional as just a synonym for emo. “Paris” fits right with the reality of a funeral. Sure, funerals aren’t a happy, joyful affair with bright colors and smiles, but funerals also aren’t completely dark, either. They’re a celebration of life — a look back to remember while you continue forward. “Paris” is precisely that.

“Paris” starts with somber, plucking guitars that pay respect to The XX, but Ariel’s delivery has an almost country twang to it. She’s restrained in her approach, taking her time as the wavering synths roll in around her. She’s conversational, casual. And even though the descriptor of funeral pop fits, especially considering their overall aesthetic, “Paris” has a hopefulness about it. It’s almost anthemic, but not quite. It’s uplifting without being cheesy, even though it ends with “I can’t be without you.” There isn't a happy ending here, but it isn't hopeless, either.

If you like what you hear above, check out the rest of MXMS’ recent releases in their Soundcloud below. And as always, keep it locked right here on EARMILK for all your favorite subgenres.
