Indie electronic artist Emmit Fenn links up with Vic Mensa on his latest release to delivery a stirring and powerful new track in “Pouring Rain.”
While “Pouring Rain” is a heartbreaking song in it of itself, the Bobby Hanaford directed clip takes Vic’s vision and doubles down, delivering a truly potent piece of work. The flick starts off with Fenn posted at a piano, playing the opening chords while Mensa sits just off his shoulder, a deep looking of contemplation on his face. From there, the video follows the two sides of the story, first the son and then the father, both of whom come together for the finale.
About the track and working with Vic, Fenn says, “When I originally sent [Vic] the idea, there was already a chorus on it that I had written but I didn't tell him much about it. I wanted to let him interpret it and allow him to have as much creative freedom as possible. So when I picked up the FaceTime call, he already had an idea. He explained to me stories from Chicago growing up that he witnessed from multiple friends, and he wanted to combine those stories into verses. Vic is one of the best storytellers in hip-hop, which he brought to life on this record.”
“Pouring Rain” is the first track to see the light of day from Fenn’s upcoming project, The Grey Area. If the remainder of the album is half as good as this release, we’re in for quite the record.
