Oh, the art of the remix. Remixing is a strange beast in music and one that has enjoyed a long life over the years, especially within the realm of Hip Hop. For rappers, “remixing” a song could either mean adding a few friends to an already classic cut, or doing your own take on a track because the original artist didn’t “do it justice.” On the production side of things, a producer will often flip a single to give it a little something extra and put their style on an otherwise dope song. Bay area producer JULiA LEWiS did that and more with his remix of Rae Sremmurd’s “Perplexing Pegasus.”
Rae Sremmurd’s original version of “Perplexing Pegasus” leans towards the purple side of Hip Hop which makes LEWiS’ synth forward and springy flip a very welcome remix. The best producers out there have an almost instantly recognizable sound, and LEWiS is no different. He tends to gravitate towards the upbeat and bouncy when it comes to his productions, which is exactly what he does with this flip. LEWiS cranks up the pitch on Sawe and Slim’s vocals, speeds up the BPMs and warms the overall feel with those synths. What started out as a track best suited for late night smoke outs has evolved into a track made for sunshine and beach parties.
