Introducing: Black Girl / White Girl and six tracks that shaped them

Turning the heads of Dennis Cruz, Jamie Jones and Shadow Child, Black Girl / White Girl (Ty & Karin) are the freshest Amsterdam based production to come onto the scene.

In a genre predominately overseen by boys, these two ladies are creating the kind of tech house that dreams are made of – releasing on well-established labels such as Flashmob and Lapsus. Several of their unreleased tracks were also doing the rounds at the beginning of this year at BPM Festival and in the sets of Santé & Sidney Charles, Max Chapman (whose label they've released on too) and Citizenn.

Their newest release, 'Petty Bear' on Smiley Fingers, is a three track EP brimming with techy groove and infectious bass – being supported early on by big players in the form of Mark Knight and Shiba San. The whole EP encases that shoulder bopping kind of vibe that sends the dance floor into a frenzy.

Sometimes it's good to get to know a little more about the people creating the music through the sounds that paint their back stories. EARMILK caught up with Ty & Karin to share and break down a few tracks they've found inspiring or made memories alongside.

Kelis – Acapella (2010) "I still cannot believe this song! It was way ahead of its time and 7 years later it still sounds fresh as fuck. I love Kelis, she does her own thing and this song totally blew me away in 2010. I used to go out raving to Ed Banger and other electro parties in Amsterdam back then, but this song just tore it up on a whole new level. for me." Ty

Robyn – Cobrastyle (2005) "I remember being mega infatuated with Robyn and waiting super impatiently for that album to drop back in 2005. I even considered studying Swedish in case we ever met, lol. This song is perfect synth-pop bliss, I love it. It reminds me of going out to gay bars in Amsterdam like the April & You2 with my friends, drinking stupid amounts of alcohol, and just being extremely loud and a massive pain in the arse." Ty

The Knife – Pass This On (2003) "Ok, so this last one was really hard. I almost chose Sigur Rós’ “Njósnavélin”, which is still one of my favourite songs. But The Knife has just made a much more profound impact on me. I think this song by The Knife is brilliant, those steel drum vibes are so on point. This song reminds me of being in high school, feeling different and just wanting to break out, fully be myself. I was just partially ‘out’ back then, and The Knife (and Sigur Rós) albums were 100% the soundtrack to me coming to terms with this and fully owning it. I still watch this video every couple of months – it’s so weird but so good." Ty

Samim – Heater (2007) "This song reminds me of the summer, going to a Purim street party with 5-6 friends, all smashed together in one car en route to a rave in Tel Aviv. I can only remember going out of the car, this song was playing, going back in the car, it was still playing.. like some sort of magical sesh loop!" Karin

Vengaboys – We're Going to Ibiza (2011)

Salem Al Fakir – 4 O'Clock (Adrian Lux Remix) (2010) "A lot of memories here! This song reminds me of my first apartment in Tel Aviv, me throwing house parties in the after hours, and always playing this song"  Karin

Black Girl / White Girl will be playing the Chicago Social Club in Amsterdam on August 11th for Over The Moon. Tickets are available here
