James Hinton, AKA The Range is back with his first batch of new material since his Superimpose EP last August. Hinton's newest musical effort is the double A-side 12" "New Lots/With You", the latter of which features Jim-E Stack, and perhaps an Adele vocal sample. Hinton certainly does have a talent for finding a good vocal sample, considering his last album, Potential, was littered with vocals purposefully plucked from amateur covers of Ariana Grande songs and other obscure YouTube videos. While the source of this new sample may be up for debate, the most noticeable change from Potential to "With You" is the lusher instrumentation and the darker, busier energy underneath the surface. While it technically lands on the AA side on the record, "With You" comes off as the stronger of the two songs, creating an ambient atmosphere until the 45-second mark, when the brisk beat comes in and hurtles us headfirst into a chasm of cavernous synths and dour synth chords."New Lots" also offers a myriad of glistening synth work, and is a bit dreamier overall.
