After her group's three critically acclaimed albums, The Internet's Syd is ready to begin her journey as a solo act in 2017. The Odd Future producer and vocalist has promised that fans will have her debut album, Fin, on February 3rd. Today, she let the world have a sneak peek of what to expect from her forthcoming project, with the release of a brand new song and accompanying video. If "All About Me" is what the rest of Fin will sound like, fans of The Internet are in for a pleasant surprise.
Instead of the smooth r&b and live instrumentation sounds of The Internet, Syd appears to be headed in a more pop/hip-hop direction. "All About Me" is a banger. Syd is a rapper. Outside of a catchy melodic hook, her singing has taken a backseat to her bars. While she still needs some fine tuning in the lyrical department, she weaves a compelling tale of overcoming adversity and lays out great advice about keeping your family close. "All About Me's" production is phenomenal, perhaps even the standout aspect of the track. The kicks are heavy, punching through the melody that floats atop. It is reminiscent of some more aggressive Toronto style trap.
"All About Me's" video is minimalistic, but it does reunite Odd Future on camera. Majority of the members of the once great rap collective make cameos. Syd did an amazing job of visually representing one of the main tenets (keeping your friends and day-ones close) of "All About Me" in a simple, but profound way.
Fin is already shaping up to be something that will defy the odds and showcase a lot of her previously repressed talents. Check out the video above.
