SAVEMONEY is in full effect. Right on the heels of the highly lauded release of Chance the Rapper's third full length mixtape, Coloring Book, his colleague and one half of the Leather Corduroys, Joey Purp is set to prep for his next project, iiidrops. It appears the young Chicago collective are ready to claim the month of May or the summer for themselves. If they continue to drop impressive collaboration one after the other, like today's "Girls @," the season very well might be theirs.
While Purp is not known for his overly jovial songs, "Girls @" is a lot of fun and made to get listeners moving. Knox Fortune, who has not ceased impressing with his oft wild sound, produces the track; he gives the two MCs a beat that is reminiscent of the summertime Neptunes' beats of yesteryear—it even includes some of Pharrell's trademark drum patterns and sounds.
Purp maintains his monotone, nonchalant delivery, but amps up the party vibe lyrics. He nestles his hook into the laidback crevices of Fortunes beat. His chorus is as addictive as it is entertaining and smooth. Chance, even though he follows Purp's direction forgoing his typical high energy verses, provides a great sixteen bars. Chancellor just flows through "Girls @," almost as if he is speaking under his breath the entire time.
"Girls @" is a fun song, which will leave you wanting to hear more from the two. Joey's forthcoming project, iiidrops, is due out on May 27.
