Derwin Panda hails from the UK, but his music as Gold Panda is inspired by far-off places like Hong Kong and Brazil.  The producer has travelled all over, but there's one place that is most precious to him – Japan.  For his third album and first for City Slang Records, Good Luck and Do Your Best, Derwin returned to Japan for inspiration, accompanied by photographer friend Laura Lewis.  Their plan was to make a final product that was as visual as it was musical, but the way Derwin sees it, his artistic creation is hardly a vehicle he controls.

“You don’t control the music you make. The tracks need to reveal themselves”, he says.  “Personally I don’t think I can choose to make it how I want.”  He was basically visiting Japan and waiting to see what would happen.  One unpredictable moment came while exiting a cab in Hiroshima.  The driver's farewell, in broken English, was "Good Luck and Do Your Best."  The statement hit home for Derwin immediately, and was the spark that ignited the album throughout its construction.  It's out May 27, watch the video for "Time Eater" below.

I received my degree in English from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, and Virginia is still home. Apart from my yearly pilgrimage to Moogfest and occasional shows in DC, Detroit, and New York, I like to stick to the fringes, with an eye always open toward music that is forward-thinking and unique, whatever the genre.
