Toro y Moi & Rome Fortune collide on new song "Pitch Black"

Chaz Bundick's been throwing us for a loop lately with his Toro y Moi project, thinking way outside the lines of his now-trademarked take on funk and disco.  Lately he's released a flurry of one-offs on his Soundcloud, such as the jarringly malevolent "That Instead of This," and "2Late," a psychedelic R&B cut featuring Kool A.D. and SAFE.  Now he's turned to hip-hop on "Pitch Black," enlisting Rome Fortune, who's always had a thing for working with unexpected producers.

The angry synths and percussion that open "Pitch Black" bring one back to "That Instead of This," but things take a turn toward off-kilter funkiness once Rome steps up to the plate.  Bundick's production is just as weird and schizophrenic as Rome's lyrics and flow, yet the whole thing fits together like a jigsaw puzzle.  All of Bundick's recent Soundcloud activity has been accompanied by a mysterious tag, #samantha, could there possibly be a new release on the horizon?

Toro y Moi is currently on tour in support of his latest album What For?, check out the dates below.

I received my degree in English from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, and Virginia is still home. Apart from my yearly pilgrimage to Moogfest and occasional shows in DC, Detroit, and New York, I like to stick to the fringes, with an eye always open toward music that is forward-thinking and unique, whatever the genre.
