Last week we shared two new songs from Inventions, the experimental ambient duo consisting of Eluvium's Matthew Cooper and Explosions in the Sky's Mark T. Smith. "Springworlds" and "Peregrine" gave us a first glimpse of Inventions' imminent sophomore album, Maze of Woods, due March 16 via Temporary Residence Ltd. / Bella Union. Now, in a surprising move, the duo has the tracks remixed by The Field and Leyland Kirby, before the album itself has even seen the light of day.
As is his usual M.O. as The Field, Axel Willner extends "Peregrine" and its yearning chords over a driving, hypnotic techno track. Meanwhile, Leyland Kirby takes "Springworld"'s crisp, cinematic beauty and submerges it in a watery murk, giving it the feel of a Balam Acab track. The remixes are part of a forthcoming collection of album retakes that will also include a contribution from A Winged Victory For the Sullen.
