Long Beach based beatsmith Zikomo has quickly become one of my favorite producers from the Soulection camp due to his deep understanding of groove and an impressive technical prowess that was plainly inspired by prolific hip-hop producers such as Madlib & the late J Dilla. With February 7th marking the birthdays of both Dilla & Nujabes, Zikomo saw it fitting to release a track in honor of both of these timeless acts.
This track "Purple" is a re-work of a Crustation song that was remixed by J Dilla back in 1997. Although it is an incredibly difficult feat to top a J Dilla production, Zikomo manages to re-imagine Dilla's downtempo interpretation by giving it a more modern, future-bass twist. The track is sped up and given a new dose of funk with a 4 x 4 kick drum pattern, ultra smoove bassline, and some eloquent vocal work. The result is an infectious head knocker that will have listeners moving for many weeks to come. Listen to (or download) the track below and make sure to check out more soulful jams at Zikomo's soundcloud!
