Kid Moxie covers "Mysteries of Love" from David Lynch's classic Blue Velvet score

"It is happening again."  David Lynch fans have been rejoicing lately over the imminent return of Twin Peaks, the director's supernatural soap opera / noir series that ended all too quickly in the early '90s.  Elena Charbila has more reason for excitement than anyone.  The Greek born, L.A.-based singer and actress, who records as Kid Moxie, just collaborated with longtime Lynch composer Angelo Badalamenti on a cover of "Mysteries of Love," from Lynch's 1986 film Blue Velvet.

Badalamenti is a legend in his own right, and deserves his share of the credit for Lynch's critical acclaim.  His scores for Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, and Mulholland Drive, among others, were a big part of what made the director's work so hauntingly effective.  For Charbila, a lifelong Lynch fan, working with Badalamenti is a dream come true.  Their new rendition of "Mysteries of Love" isn't just a rehashing of old material.  Badalamenti's production sounds, appropriately, more modern, and Charbila's vocals are higher and sweeter than the original vocals of Julee Cruise.

"Mysteries of Love" will appear on Kid Moxie's forthcoming album 1888, out through self-release on Dec. 2, with vinyl coming via Undo / EMI.  And hey, more Twin Peaks is just around the corner.  One would assume Badalamenti will be involved, and it wouldn't be shocking at all if Elena Charbila was along for the ride.  Check out their new version of the song, as well as the original Blue Velvet scene below.

I received my degree in English from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, and Virginia is still home. Apart from my yearly pilgrimage to Moogfest and occasional shows in DC, Detroit, and New York, I like to stick to the fringes, with an eye always open toward music that is forward-thinking and unique, whatever the genre.
