In 1970, Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter fashioned for their fifth studio album, Workingman's Dead, what has since become one of the Grateful Dead's most well known songs. Performed in concert over 300 times throughout the course of GD history, "Casey Jones" is considered one of the most recognizable Dead songs to both heads and non-heads alike. As such, remixing the already established is a feet damn near impossible to achieve successfully. We can safely say, however, that The Golden Pony are the current frontrunners in the futile battle for properly mastered Grateful Dead reworks.
Sultry percussion, whirling backing synths, and a rolling bass line were the last things we thought Jerry's voice needed, but, lo and behold, they work quite well. What's that? A sexy saxophone? Damn straight it is, and it fits perfectly. I believe, above all else, the most important aspect of this remix (and boy was I worried they'd forget about it) is the use of Jerry's variation of "Watch your speed!" at the end of the song. They came through, and for that I personally thank them.
Good job guys, keep up the solid work.
