San Franciscan DJ & producer Mikos Da Gawd released an EP with Soulection on March 8. The whole thing is free, part of the Soulection White Label series where the label drops two or four track free EPs by featured artists. Mikos Da Gawd came out with a four track EP, featuring Mr. Carmack and Tele Fresco.
His opening track, “What Would I Do” walks a fine line between competing impulses, rumination and creation. Neosoul vocal and truncated trumpet samples compose the entirety of the track. Here, it isn’t about progression, rather Mikos lets the nostalgia of the samples work in successive swells. Brief flourishes like bright guitar hooks and pitched vocals expose the samples in different lights.
