R&B soul songstress Emily King is currently poised to redefine ‘pop’ in the way that fallen legend Amy Winehouse, and more recently Adele have done with her new single “Distance.” The single is her first release in a year, and by keeping her smooth R&B vocals folk-based, and undeniably authentic it has been well worth the wait. If anything, King’s distance over the past year has only made her place in the industry even more intriguing, and within 24 hrs of the singles release it had already been featured on MTV Buzzworthy. She is one of those rare artists who actually have the potential to be in an elite class of musicians before the masses without a major label behind her. Brooklyn-based King had originally signed with music mogul Clive Davis, but now a free agent, she has successfully scored opening slots with pop heavyweights Maroon 5, John Legend and Emeli Sandé due to her indisputable and truly organic talent. Also, the Grammy nominated singer and songwriter actually writes the materials herself as opposed to more produced and strictly ‘pop’ divas.
New ballad “Distance” is rife with emotion, and a whole lot of heart, but all well keeping her vocals smooth, and filling them with the fiery passion that is so often found in up and coming NYC artists. And King certainly is the epitome of that NYC drive, having being raised in the Lower East Side herself. But she is a singer who does the industry grind with class and a true sense of self, as we can clearly hear in her poetic lyrics, and artfully subdued, polished, and ever-lush vocal styles. A true crowd pleaser, plan to a buy a ticket to her live performances a few months in advance, as she almost exclusively plays sold out shows!
