Women in electronic music, especially those who step outside the formerly male-dominated box of EDM are currently driven to be on the rise. Australia based producer and DJ Helena premiers her new single “Breathe,” today on Earmilk, to begin 2014 with an undeniably catchy club banger. Signed to the Mutants Records label, Helena is one of many women making a splash in the industry right now, and while a feminine spin on EDM isn’t exactly new, it is coming into the scene with an aggressive stance that wasn’t seen previously.
Mutants artist-in-chief John Dahlback is in full support of her presence within the label, describing the industry aspect of her latest release as, “It really is all about the music at the end of the day, but it’s undoubtedly great to see a female DJ and producer debut on the label.” So take a deep breath before you listen to her new track, because it is a roller coaster of cool, dynamic breaks interspersed with what can only be described as “filthy power drops.” It burns with a momentary intensity, and she achieved her goals of creating an energetic feel through funk house elements and contagious, acid-tinged riffs in under two minutes. If “Breathe,” is an indicator of the current trend of women in EDM, I sincerely hope that it continues to push forward in the industry.
