MisterWives – "Hold On, We're Going Home" (Drake Cover) [Premiere]

If you know how to work the internet chances are you've heard Drake's R&B-infused hit "Hold On, We're Going Home". The record and its corresponding video (which spawned this strangely awesome image) have been buzzing for weeks now, and the song is currently sitting at #4 on the Billboard 100. If you are a competent internet user that knows a little more than internet basics (or an individual who frequents the blogosphere) then you've probably heard a few covers, too. But I'm pretty sure you haven't heard any as good or as refreshingly original as this. The key to a good cover is redefining the song and taking it to new territory. MisterWives took that sentiment to heart when creating their own re-imagining of the smash single, and their masterful vision allows the cover to stand alone on its own merits.

One can assume MisterWives is a relatively new band — they joined Facebook late last year — but there is a sonic chemistry present that would suggest they've been playing together for quite some time. Their take on "Hold On, We're Going Home" has a very folky feel with its light percussion and acoustic foundation, but it doesn't stray too far away from the original that it might become unrecognizable to a Drake fan. Lead singer Mandy Lee's vocals take center stage over a version of the song that strips the original bare but leaves the emotional core intact. Her voice is gentle and airy until she buckles down and amps up the volume to power through the songs climactic finish. In a lot of ways, it feels like an original song, and that's why it's such a great cover.

Check out MisterWives' cover of Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" below (check out another one of their songs below as well), and be sure to see them out on tour through the rest of the year at these locations.

MisterWives debut EP will be released on Photo Finish Records later this year.
