Today's delivery is from Mayer Hawthorne. His newest release, “Designer Drug” is the perfect song to end the working day on a happy note. Keeping it simultaneously modern and nostalgic in the way only he can, he mixes light humor about the designer drug use of this generation (name dropping MDMA and the college favorite, Adderall), with his deep love of an unidentified (although very lucky) gal. It's very much the Stones Throw alumni at his best- keeping it classy like a Michael Buble, but with enough cheeky-ness that he can still hold his own in the more underground scenes. While Justin Timberlake has become the face of soulful white guy crooning the blues, I'd say "Designer Drug" easily roundhouse kicks "Suit and Tie"in the face. Hopefully this is an indicator of what's more to come from the Michigan Native, as this song might be one of his best so far. All I know is, Mayer Hawthorne might be talking about a girl as his drug, but this song might just be my drug of choice tonight.
