Dubfire at Marquee NY Grand Opening [Event Review]

Marquee is a club that's a legend amongst its kind. Harvard Business School has published a study on it; new clubs aspire to be it. This weekend, the original New York City outpost of the club re-opened its doors to a highly anticipated weekend, with headlining Grammy-winning artist Dubfire inaugurating the decks. 

While other clubs were both opening and closing their doors, Marquee set out to revamp both its look and its outlook on the club scene. This Friday not only celebrated the remodel, but also the kickoff of Sleepy & Boo's Basic NYC, featuring everything from progressive to underground tech house. Walking in, we immediately felt the new vibe: lots of light bulbs, artistically placed throughout a venue that you can't just show up at, but when you do and can get in, you know you'll open the doors to someone like Kaskade spinning unannounced on the decks in front of you.

With a setup that mirrors some European clubs–a square floor, a mezzanine that overlooks the dance floor, gogo dancers above and a Cirque du Soleil-esque LED disco ball above–Dubfire had a canvas in front of him waiting to be painted and the ability to dictate first impressions of the new space. What was once a club with a setup highlighting table placement is now redesigned to accommodate the new club age that surrounds DJ performances. Beyond the Funktion 1 sound system that is no question the best in the city, the new venue provided space to dance, lights that were visible from both the main floor and the mezzanine, and quality spinning from both Sleepy & Boo and Dubfire to make the night an absolute success.

The reopening of a club that's gone through so much in its years of operation is but a symbol of the changing culture in American night life. Staying ahead of the trend is what everyone aims to do, and we look forward to seeing how the famous establishments like Marquee do so. Hosting further events from Basic NYC as well as big name artists like Chuckie, the new Marquee promises to be on the pulse of dance music and club culture, and to house the events in an exclusive high end environment.
