It always feels odd to call a band "brand new," mostly because it's a widely known fact that nothing in the music industry happens overnight. That said, London four-piece Zooni are certainly brand new to me. And they will be to much of the world too, because Tuesday marks the release of their first ever single "Pany."
Zooni is comprised of Peter Martin, George Godwin, Ben Clark, and and Matt Glasbey. They describe themselves as art-pop, but "Pany" has more of an alternative tone. It's a richly textured track, hypnotic but gentle. The layered synths feel almost secondary to the stunning piano and wavering vocal. The lyrics are poetic, but not in a way that seems intent on making you immediately aware of them. "Pany" grows into itself, its crescendo ultimately peaking at the very end of a gorgeous debut.
