Chicago, Illinois native and R&B singer-songwriter Ravyn Lenae has always been an artist who defies the norm, constantly redefining R&B by blending genres and crafting a sound uniquely her own.

With her highly anticipated album Bird’s Eye, Lenae offers a literal bird’s-eye view into her world, presenting tracks that are both beautifully honest and experimental—an unapologetic showcase of her artistry at this stage of her career.

Reflecting on the album’s creation, Lenae shares, “One of the most beautiful things about making Bird’s Eye was the amount of reflection that was required to truly tell a story that felt clear and honest. Digging into the nooks and crannies of my journey so far was so rewarding in many ways, but it’s most meaningful when it manifests into tangible change in my life.” This deep introspection is evident throughout the project.

With production credits from Craig Balmoris, Dahi, Ely Rise, FNZ, Ritz Reynolds, Solomonophonic, and Spencer Stewart, plus standout features from Childish Gambino and Ty Dolla $ign, the album expertly marries Lenae’s signature sound with fresh, boundary-pushing elements.

This mix of inventive production and standout collaborations is enhanced by the album's homage to the late '90s and early 2000s, where Lenae’s vocal delivery and melodies channel the smooth, sultry tones of Janet Jackson and the rich harmonies of Brandy.

Lenae’s unmatched vocal performance shines throughout Bird’s Eye, with her mastery of airy, ethereal, and sincere vocals conveying a sweet honesty that compels listeners to believe every word she sings.

The album begins with “Genius,” featuring a sexy bassline, soft rock drums, a catchy melody, and Lenae’s angelic vocals. The memorable lyric, “We get it right every single day, but once or twice, s*** gets in the way, but it’s alright. Never mind what we said last night,” has a forgiving quality that leaves you feeling renewed after listening.

Following this is “Bad Idea,” which kicks off with a fast-paced vocal melody and an irregular, rough-edged rhythm. The smooth, upfront vocals and melody channel Janet Jackson, while the minimal keys that start around the midway point offer a brief respite from the track's gritty rhythm. It’s a strong second track that highlights Lenae’s knack for blending genres while staying true to her distinctive style.

Next, we have the already-released single, “One Wish” featuring Childish Gambino.

This track shows real artistic courage, exploring the pain of having an absent father and the need to let go of hoping he’ll change.

Lenae’s airy vocals take us on a nostalgic trip, with an old-school flair enhanced by cut samples that amplify her serene performance. The chorus, “I can’t spend this one wish on you,” captures the complex mix of longing and acceptance, making the song haunting and mesmerizing. Gambino's feature is silky and provides the father's perspective, adding a layer of closure to the song. It’s a beautifully crafted track that resonates deeply, whether you’ve faced similar experiences or simply connected with its raw emotion.

Transitioning to the next single, “Dream Girl” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, Lenae continues to evoke a floating sensation she’s perfected throughout the album. The track combines compelling guitar lines with a straightforward drum beat, creating a harmonious backdrop that complements her vocals beautifully and gives the impression of effortlessly soaring through the music. Ty Dolla $ign's feature fits perfectly, enhancing the track with his beautiful vocals, which blend seamlessly with Lenae's performance.

In contrast, “Candy” introduces a playful, calypso-inspired beat that adds a refreshing charm to the album. It offers a lighthearted break from the deeper, more emotionally charged tracks that dominate the rest of the album.

“Love Is Blind” opens with a harp that creates the impression of being played in a distant room. The song reflects on the realization captured in the lyric, “I guess they meant when they say ‘love is blind.’” This introspective mood flows smoothly into “Love Me Not,” which has a more indie rock flair, exploring the dynamics of a tumultuous relationship with playful instrumentation, a catchy melody, and relatable lyrics, acting as an engaging anthem for anyone familiar with the ups and downs of romance.

“From Scratch” is a standout, showcasing Lenae’s signature style with repetitive guitar licks and her ethereal vocals floating above. A notable highlight is a haunting opera clip that emerges midway, blending seamlessly with the music and adding a unique, eerie quality.

“1 of 1” has a futuristic vibe with its glitchy production and distorted keys, mixing early 2000s influences with a fresh, modern twist.

The second-to-last track, “Pilot,” brings a raw, soulful edge with its vinyl crackling effect, giving it a nostalgic, vintage feel. The song wraps you in its warm, reflective mood, and addictive melody. Lenae’s vocals soar with dynamic intensity, floating effortlessly over a beat that keeps the track grounded. The guitar and vocal lines intertwine in a waltz-like rhythm, gently swaying the listener into a dreamlike state.

Lenae closes the album with “Days,” a track featuring a bossa nova-inspired groove and soothing melody that perfectly wraps up her imaginative and diverse 11-song journey.

In the end, Bird’s Eye emerges as a brilliant and deeply personal sonic statement, masterfully blending rhythmic guitar, infectious beats, and ethereal harmonies with raw, introspective lyrics. It’s a fusion of old and new, mixing nostalgic influences with a cutting-edge sound that keeps you hooked from start to finish.

This album doesn’t just play with genres—it reinvents them. For anyone craving a fresh and innovative R&B experience, Bird’s Eye is a must-listen.
