Chicago, Illinois native and R&B singer-songwriter Ravyn Lenae has always been an artist who defies the norm, constantly redefining R&B by blending genres and crafting a sound uniquely her own.
With her highly anticipated album Bird’s Eye, Lenae offers a literal bird’s-eye view into her world, presenting tracks that are both beautifully honest and experimental—an unapologetic showcase of her artistry at this stage of her career.
Reflecting on the album’s creation, Lenae shares, “One of the most beautiful things about making Bird’s Eye was the amount of reflection that was required to truly tell a story that felt clear and honest. Digging into the nooks and crannies of my journey so far was so rewarding in many ways, but it’s most meaningful when it manifests into tangible change in my life.” This deep introspection is evident throughout the project.
With production credits from Craig Balmoris, Dahi, Ely Rise, FNZ, Ritz Reynolds, Solomonophonic, and Spencer Stewart, plus standout features from Childish Gambino and Ty Dolla $ign, the album expertly marries Lenae’s signature sound with fresh, boundary-pushing elements.
This mix of inventive production and standout collaborations is enhanced by the album's homage to the late '90s and early 2000s, where Lenae’s vocal delivery and melodies channel the smooth, sultry tones of Janet Jackson and the rich harmonies of Brandy.
Lenae’s unmatched vocal performance shines throughout Bird’s Eye, with her mastery of airy, ethereal, and sincere vocals conveying a sweet honesty that compels listeners to believe every word she sings.
The album begins with “Genius,” featuring a sexy bassline, soft rock drums, a catchy melody, and Lenae’s angelic vocals. The memorable lyric, “We get it right every single day, but once or twice, s*** gets in the way, but it’s alright. Never mind what we said last night,” has a forgiving quality that leaves you feeling renewed after listening.
Following this is “Bad Idea,” which kicks off with a fast-paced vocal melody and an irregular, rough-edged rhythm. The smooth, upfront vocals and melody channel Janet Jackson, while the minimal keys that start around the midway point offer a brief respite from the track's gritty rhythm. It’s a strong second track that highlights Lenae’s knack for blending genres while staying true to her distinctive style.
Next, we have the already-released single, “One Wish” featuring Childish Gambino.
