Berlin-based, Canadian artist deadPEASNTS has released his debut EP Forecasted Storms. His music can be described as a seamless blend of indie, alternative, dream pop, and psychedelic rock.
The eponymous track “Forecasted Storms” is no exception.
The track opens with an indie-rock feel fueled by lush chords, pounding percussion, and acoustic guitar to fill out the texture. Distorted electric guitar plays mellow arpeggios and makes way for a lilting melodic line in the vocals. A groovy bass line grounds the track while doubled vocals hover above creating an atmospheric mood.
“You say that you’re begging my pardon / When ya tell me the way to be / Well I’m sorry to trample your garden / But my future’s not yours to see”
The artist describes his new track by saying, "deadPEASNTS debut EP title track is a cinematic indie rock slow-burn about pursuing one's own path despite warnings of imminent disaster. Dreamy atmosphere, shimmering guitars, and psych-Motown outro."
Shuffle percussion steadies the track, giving it directionality. As the track builds, the instrumental lines continue to layer upon themselves.
Bright, rippling tones are introduced as a glimmering dream pop element. The vocals scoop and rise, giving the track a weightless feel. The mood shifts as the melodic line cascades downward, tumbling towards the bridge of the track.
“But you don’t wanna know / Why your world’s falling down”
Just shy of three minutes into the piece, the instrumentals strip back, creating a sense of vulnerability that brings the vocals to the forefront. The slide of fingers along the metal strings becomes audible, making the track feel even more intimate.
As the song cycles back to its introduction, the bass line gradually builds before a psychedelic guitar solo takes center stage. The steady snare and supporting chords slowly fade as the track winds down, ultimately concluding on a lush, resonant chord.
“When you end up alone / And the day, comes, that you find out, you were wrong / about all your forecasted storms / yeah I want you to know / I’ll be smiling”
